Short answer: A trenchless sewer repair quote should begin with a recorded camera inspection and end with a recorded acceptance inspection. Between those points it must identify whether the method is CIPP lining, pipe bursting, or another system; explain why the pipe is eligible; define cleaning, roots, offsets, branch connections, cleanouts, access pits, curing or pulling, testing, permits, and restoration; and name the conditions that require open excavation instead.

Trenchless does not mean excavation-free, and sewer lining is not the same as sewer replacement. EPA describes multiple rehabilitation methods, including cured-in-place pipe, sliplining, and pipe bursting, that use the existing pipe path while reducing full-length excavation. Each method has different limits, materials, access needs, and effects on inside diameter.

Do not compare a CIPP liner, a pipe-bursting replacement, and an open-cut repair as if they deliver the same result. Normalize the diagnosed defect, structural objective, finished diameter, service life documentation, access and restoration scope, and failure fallback before comparing totals.

Require A Recorded Diagnosis Before Choosing The Method

The proposal should include a pre-work CCTV video with distance markers and a written defect map. CIPP uses a resin-saturated tube that is inserted and cured to form a pipe within the existing pipe. Pipe bursting breaks or displaces the old pipe while pulling a new pipe behind the bursting head. The quote should state which result is being purchased and avoid vague language such as trenchless replacement when the actual scope is a liner.

For lining, request finished internal diameter, liner thickness or design basis, resin and tube system documentation, cure method, branch reinstatement method, and acceptance criteria. For bursting, request new pipe material and size, joining method, pull length, bursting method, connection details, and pressure or leak testing appropriate to the installation.

Map Every Access Point And Surface Opening

Most residential trenchless projects still need a cleanout, insertion point, receiving pit, or exposed connection. The proposal should show the exact location and size of each opening plus equipment access, spoil handling, utility locating, protection of landscaping, and final restoration.

If a new cleanout is required, confirm its size, location, cover, and code or utility approval. If the public connection or foundation transition must be excavated, the bid should include those pits rather than advertising the work as entirely no-dig.

Define Cleaning, Root Removal, And Pipe Preparation

The contractor should state how grease, scale, roots, protruding connections, failed patches, and standing debris will be removed. The condition after cleaning can change eligibility, so the quote needs a decision point and a clear price or stop procedure if the pipe is worse than the first camera suggested.

Ask how wastewater service is controlled during preparation and installation. EPA guidance notes that rehabilitation can require shutdowns or flow control. A homeowner bid should identify the expected outage, occupant instructions, and responsibility for an unexpected delay.

Protect Branches, Connections, And Hydraulic Capacity

The quote should identify every active branch and the way it will be protected or reopened. For a liner, remote cutting must restore connections without leaving a flap, restriction, or missed branch. For bursting, the contractor must reconnect the building drain and public sewer connection with specified fittings and inspection access.

Ask whether the method changes the finished internal diameter and whether the contractor has evaluated the required capacity and slope. A smaller liner or unresolved belly can leave a recurring service problem even when the pipe wall is renewed.

Control Curing, Pulling, And Site Risks

For CIPP, the proposal should identify the curing process, monitoring records, ventilation and site controls, disposal responsibilities, and the manufacturer's installation procedure. For pipe bursting, it should identify pulling or bursting equipment, force and soil assumptions, separation from nearby utilities, and what happens if the pull stops.

Unmapped utilities, thick repair couplings, concrete encasement, sharp bends, and soil movement can change the job. Require evidence and written authorization before an unforeseen condition becomes extra work.

Use Acceptance Evidence Instead Of A Verbal Finish
